«Artists are often asked about the starting point of their work… I think I can sincerely say that, prior to being an artist, I’m a « reader ». What activated and continues activating creation for me is reading. Would each photograph I create be the retranscription of a disruption, sometimes an old one, created by reading? Would all the places I photograph have been read before being seen?
Black and white has been chosen for the color of the text, a kind of « grey matter ».
Photography understood like a literary or romanesque field…Isn’t a book with characters and places a novel ? (Hervé Guibert, in « Le Seul visage »)
I quickly approached photography in its simplest device. A simple Nikon and a 50 mm. A heavy camera, that implies slow movements. The still image rather than the moving one, because it’s my duty to move myself. Isn’t it the definition of emotion? Looking at the silence and looking for a thinking form rather than the fantasy that the photograph is a reflection of light and, at the same time, of thought.»
